I had similar experience in Indonesia in the mid 90s. The squat toilet, sans TP, took some working out, and getting used to. Then I went to Japan - now they have it sorted as the best of both worlds. I paid handsomely for a replica 'shower toilet' seat when I got home. Superb experience every time now.
